The more elaborate the scheme, the longer it may take the pirates to get around it, but get around it they will. So, in a sense, any copy protection scheme is nothing more than a roadblock for the pirates to get around.
The first thing that people need to understand about software piracy is that *it will always happen* with software of any reasonable popularity for those pirates and cracking groups for whom the aim of the game is to prove to each other that they're smarter than the programmers who wrote the copy protection systems in the first place, the more elaborate the copy protection scheme the better: the more impressive it is when it is broken. When we're looking at ways of protecting our software from piracy, we have a difficult balance to strike.
The only real boast they have is to say they have a copy, but not actually how to use it effectively. I would never condone piracy but I think the access to ripped programs is in most hands an empty adventure where little is ever produced of any real merit. There are numerous correspondences like this in the Music Software press and a lot of piracy benefactors/end users agree that they usally see the software sitting idly on their computers doing little or nothing as they don't really know what the software can really do for them. I have yet to see a 3drd party guide in PC World for Sibelius thankfully).
Many people use cracked software of all types (Sibelius obviously, Cubase, Logic etc.) but in the main I think a lot of these people get very limited or frustrating use from the software they have acquired as they don't have the help network or more importantly the manual (and unlike Cubase, Logic, Word, Excel, etc.
